Thumbnails: What You Need to Know
As you know, all patrons are listed on the Society's website, www.asopa.com unless they request otherwise.
Some artists have also opted to have a thumbnail image and link
to their website. This can be a good promotional too, since there are artists who have been commissioned to do a portrait as a result of their ASOPA thumbnail and link.
Also, we periodically receive calls from a portrait prospect seeking
someone in their area. If you have a thumbnail and link on your ASOPA listing,
we can easily refer them to this page and the link to your site.
Artists meeting certain criteria are invited to have thumbnails
next to their names for a fee of $50 for the first year, $25 each
subsequent year. This thumbnail can be linked to an enlargement
of the portrait featured, or to your own site.
Approval for a link from ASOPA is a two-step process based on (1)
your artwork and (2) your website. The Society reserves the right
to alter or add to these requirements at it deems necessary.
Acceptance of artwork
To have your work approved for a link, you must meet one or more
of the following criteria:
1. You have Signature status in the American Society of Portrait
Artists
2. You are represented on the Stroke of Genius website.
3. Your work is approved by an ASOPA Selection Committee made up
of Advisory Board members.
Website Requirements and Explanation
of Link
Your website must meet the following criteria in order to be approved
for a link from www.asopa.com:
Acceptable Images: Art in the "portraits" section should
be actual portraits and not simply figurative art or candid paintings
of people. ASOPA reserves the right to make individual judgments
regarding the inclusion of nude art. Sites should essentially be
neutral in terms of promoting any religious, political and/or social
cause. Any exceptions to this will have to be addressed individually.
Destination of link: If actual portraits are not visible
on the home page, the link will be to your "portraits" section if
you are also presenting other types of work. If you do not have
a separate portrait section, mixing of portraits and other works
is only allowed if the other works on the page are 25% or less of
the total number of images and they are presented at the end of
the display. Artist sites that are part of a larger art web site
are acceptable, however the link will only be to the individual
artist's portraits.
Presentation of Images: Images are to be initially presented
in thumbnail view (60-120 pixels high) and should click to an enlargement.
One exception is if you have four or fewer portraits to display,
in which case, images can be 260 pixels high and the enlargement
is optional. Only one enlargement is to be displayed per page.
Page Width: Ideally the body of the page should not be about 590 pixels wide so that it fits in the ASOPA frame without the viewer having to scroll horizontally. Pages wider than this may or may not cause disqualification. Each website will be judged on a case by case basis.
Portrait Image Format: All portrait images, both thumbnail
and enlargement are to be in the .jpg format and no larger than
60k. There are graphics programs to achieve the necessary compression
at the time of file save for larger files.
Tastefulness: Language on the site and design must be in
good taste and free of extraneous "cutesy" Internet fads. For example,
there should be no blinking text and preferably no animated images.
Color scheme, design elements and navigation should be consistent
throughout the site and navigation should be easy and very visible.
Garish color schemes and overly large blaring text should be avoided
Contact Information: A way to contact you should be easily
available on your site. Please include your actual email address
rather than only using a mail form where no email address is visible.
